What are Essential Oils....in a Nut Shell.

Essential Oil Basics
Essential oils are the vital fluids of plants, or one may call it their “life blood”. The reason the word “essential” is used is because this is what is necessary for this plant to have life.
Essential oils are made up of tiny molecules. These molecules are so small that they can make their way into every cell and basically administer therapy at the most fundamental levels of our body.
Every drop of oil contains 40 million-trillion molecules. One drop has 40,000 times the amount of molecules we have in our bodies. Therefore, you do not have to use a lot of oil to get results. As a matter of fact, you could use too much and overload the receptor sites. Less is better in most cases.
Most essential oil molecules are made up of three different compounds. They are phenols, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes.
Phenols create conditions where unfriendly viruses and bacteria cannot live. Their most important feature is that they clean the receptor sites on the cells. If your receptor sites are not clean, cells can not communicate and sickness results.
Monoterpenes are found in most essential oils and they offer a variety of healing properties. The most important ability of this compound is the fact that they can reprogram miswritten information in the cellular memory, or DNA. If you have improper coding in your DNA, what happens? Cells malfunction and diseases result, including cancer.
PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THIS NEXT PARAGRAPH!
Sesquiterpenes deliver oxygen molecules to cells, just like hemoglobin does in the blood. Sesquiterpenes can also erase or deprogram miswritten codes in cellular memory. They are thought to be really great for fighting cancer. The main issue with cancer cells is that they contain misinformation, and sesquiterpenes can delete that. At the same time the misinformation gets deleted, the oxygen carried by these molecules create an environment where cancer cells can not reproduce. One disables and the other stops growth!

Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils and Young Living .....what does this mean?

The term "therapeutic grade" is a term many essential oil suppliers use when describing their oils. However, the term was first used by Young Living to communicate/differentiate that their oils were of medicinal use, and not to be confused with oils available at a retail store or health food store, and those of cosmetic or strictly "air fresheners." The term "therapeutic grade" is not an FDA term, as the FDA does not monitor, inspect, or patent any essential oil. They cannot patent an all-natural product. So, how do you know what caliber of essential oil you get with Young Living?
1. Young Living has been in the business for 20+ years with satisfied customers, a reputation for unsurpassed quality, and cutting edge research and product innovation.
2. Young Living is a full disclosure company. Any distributor can go to one of their farms and participate in planting, harvesting, and distilling the oils. They are open about the process. The company will answer questions and provide documentation about the purity, safety, and effectiveness of their products on request.
3. It takes deliberate and knowledgeable oversight of all areas of oil production in order to know the value of what you are selling. So if a producer is making a high quality oil, they are not going to sell it to someone only willing to pay bottom dollar for it. That is a major reason why warning bells should go off in your head when you see essential oils at bargain basement prices. No producer would sell a high quality oil to a distributor for a cheap price when they know they could easily get more money for it.
4. Plant: You should first consider what is the source of the oil? Is it a synthetic oil created in a lab? Is the oil from the correct breed of plant? For example, did you know that there is more than one species of lavender and that only Lavandula Augustifolia provides the famed results that most people associate as lavender? Many companies sell Lavandin, which is a hybrid version of lavender, and they label it as lavender, and it does not provide the same benefits as Lavandula Augustifolia. Make sure you can see the latin name of any plant on your oils to ensure that you are getting the correct plant’s oil. Another example is clove bud oil vs. clove leaf or clove stem oil. Clove buds yield less oil than clove leaf and clove stems, but the properties of the oil from the buds is different from the oil from the stems and leaves. However, the oil from the leaves/stems has a higher potential to be irritating than oil from the bud. And would you believe, they smell EXACTLY the same? So read your labels! Do your research. Make sure, if you decide to try Young Living essential oils, that you communicate with and engage with someone who has at least a working knowledge of essential oils, and a network of people responsive and educated about therapeutic essential oils. (if an oil contains 5 to 8 % purity, it can legally be labeled as "pure)." Don't let the claim of "Pure" confuse you. And, don't let the term "therapeutic grade" confuse you. Many companies can say that as it isn't monitored, but not many can back it up with testing, labs, education, and oversight (not to mention feedback and responsiveness).
5. Preparation: In order to provide therapeutic benefits, each specific plant has to be distilled at its own pressure, its own temperature, in its own method and for a precise time. Any deviation from the specific method, and the oil can be completely useless. This requires expert attention and capable equipment. The ability to do this requires huge investments and a commitment to purity on the companies part. Anyone can purchase oils from a broker and then resell them, but it takes someone with experience and equipment to ensure that the oils that they grow and that they purchase actually provide the benefits that they are supposed to provide. It is worth noting, that some essential oil companies distill the plant material more than one time. The first distillation is the one that provides the highest quality oil. Each subsequent distillation provides a lower quality oil than the time before. There is no requirement to disclose what distillation the oil you are buying is from. Know your company before you buy. Young Living uses only the first distillation in bottled and sealed essential oils.
6. Purity: "Adulteration" is the buzzword in the oiling community these days with companies accusing each other of adulterating their oils. Did you know that many companies use solvents to help the plant matter to release more essential oils? These solvents are often caustic and toxic chemicals, and while the companies say that they remove the solvents after distillation, once it is in the oil, imagine how difficult it would be to remove every bit of solvent. Some, even a small amount or trace amount, would likely remain. One of the wonderful properties of essential oils is that, because they permeate cell walls more efficiently than other molecules, they can also carry anything that they are with deep into the body as well. This is why we always suggest a high grade, virgin, unrefined carrier oil when diluting essential oils from Young Living. When the oils are with a nutrient of benefit to the body, this is great. Unfortunately, when the oils are adulterated, they then can also carry the adulterant (in this case the solvent) deep into the body as well. Additionally, synthetic extenders are frequently added to stretch an authentic oil and can smell similar to the real thing. Every batch of Young Living oil is tested for purity. They test for pesticides, heavy metals, dioxins, along with adulterants so that you can be assured that every bottle of oil is truly pure. Imagine how long the company would have survived otherwise. Sure, you can purchase bottles that say pure, or therapeutic grade at a health food store, or the vitamin shop. They aren't the same product as Young Living essential oils. Not even close. I wouldn't dare use them the way I use YL oils, and I certainly would never consider ingesting them for any specific need. No way.
7. Potency: In order for the oils to have a therapeutic use, all of the active components must be in the oil. The oils must be prepared properly in order for them to be potent, (aka have any power to work on the body). Young Living ensures all batches are tested to ensure that all the essential components are in the oil before they bottle and send it on to the consumer. If a batch fails to meet the Young Living standard, they WILL NOT bottle or sell it. If an oil goes out of stock due to demand, or due to not distilling at the highest quality, then it just goes out of stock. That's Young Living's choice as a company, and it's a choice that gives me confidence in their products. Other essential oil companies that possibly do not have the consumer base or the company strength of Young Living have been known to bottle and sell what should be a rejected batch. Remember, only 5 to 8 % purity is required to claim "purity." Therefore a company might well think 85% purity is good enough for them; but not Young Living. And, I am very thankful for that. Whether I personally choose to use essential oils topically, aromatically.

Frankincense Superior to Chemotherapy in Killing Late-Stage Ovarian Cancer Cells

Like the Magi, carrying myrrh, frankincense, and gold, researchers from the University of Leicesterhave, for the first time, demonstrated the potential of treating ovarian cancer using the Christmas gift frankincense.
The origins of frankincense can be traced to the Arabian Peninsula. According to Herodotus (5th century BC):
Arabia is the only country which produces frankincense, myrrh, cassia, and cinnamon.. the trees bearing the frankincense are guarded by winged serpents of small size and various colors. (See this GreenMedInfo Summary)
Frankincense, along with gold and myrrh, is one of the most famous Christmas presents in history, and is a fragrant plant resin extracted from the Boswellia sacra tree found across Africa and Arabia. Using the compound AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid) derived from the resin, the research has successfully shown its potential effectiveness in targeting ovarian cancer.
More specifically, they have been able to demonstrate the ability of AKBA to combat cancer cells in late-stage ovarian cancer.
Lead researcher Kamla Al-Salmani, PhD student from the University's Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine explained:
After a year of studying the AKBA compound with ovarian cancer cell lines in vitro, we have been able to show it is effective at killing the cancer cells.  Frankincense is taken by many people with no known side effects. This finding has enormous potential to be taken to a clinical trial in the future and developed into an additional treatment for ovarian cancer.
Frankincense has been used as a folk medicine for centuries due to its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a viable treatment for asthma, skin conditions and gastroenteritis among others. Previous studies have also successfully linked AKBA as a potential treatment for many other cancers, including colon, breast and prostate cancer; however this is the first study to demonstrate its potential in combating ovarian cancer.
The researchers have shown that this frankincense compound is effective at killing ovarian cancercells at realistic concentrations. What has been most surprising is that the cells we have tested which are resistant to chemotherapy have shown to be more sensitive to this compound, suggesting frankincense may indeed be able to help overcome drug resistance, and lead to an improved survival rate for patients with late-stage ovarian cancer.

Health Benefits of Wintergreen Essential Oil

The health benefits of Wintergreen Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties as an analgesic, anodyne, antirheumatic, antiarthritic, antispasmodic, antiseptic, aromatic, astringent, carminative, diuretic, emenagogue and stimulating substance.
The oil of wintergreen is a world famous name, and it is extremely popular with the people suffering from rheumatism, arthritis, gout and pain in their bones and joints from any number of reasons. This oil can usually be found in every household because it has so many common applications. Wintergreen is a tree native to North America and it is believed to have been Native Americans who discovered the use of its oil to eliminate pain in the muscles and joints.
The botanical name of this shrub is Gaultheria Procumbens. The essential oil of this plant is extracted by steam distillation of its leaves. Menthyl Salicylate and Gaultherilene are the two main components of this essential oil and Menthyl Salicylate forms an integral part of almost every antiarthritic and analgesic balm for muscle and joint pain that is available on the market.
Let us quickly examine some of the most notable medicinal properties of this highly poisonous, yet very useful, essential oil.
Analgesic: I doubt that I need to introduce this property of Wintergreen essential oil to anyone, since it is one of the major properties for which it is known around the world. When rubbed on the affected area, this oil is readily absorbed through the skin and the presence of Menthyl Salicylate induces numbness and an anesthetic effect on the nerves there. It also increases circulation of the blood and brings warmth to the area. In this way, it fights pain.
Anodyne: This property means that an agent can eliminate pain and induce relaxation. Therefore, it is a combination of an analgesic and a relaxant. Wintergreen essential oil will eradicate pain and drive out stress and tension. This is a very pleasant way of getting a sound sleep at the end of the day for those who often lose sleep due to pain or stress.
Antirheumatic & Antiarthritic: These characteristics of the essential oil of wintergreen are based on the stimulating property of this oil. This oil fights rheumatism and arthritis in two ways. First, when applied externally, it easily penetrates through the skin around the muscles and tissues and stimulates circulation of blood in that location. This activity, apart from bringing warmth to the affected area, helps to clear obstructions in the flow of blood, which is one of the major causes behind rheumatism and arthritis, and it does not let toxins like uric acid accumulate at that spot. Secondly, although it is absorbed through the skin, it eventually reaches the blood stream, where it stimulates and increases urination, acting as a diuretic. This speeds up the removal of toxins like uric acid from the body through urination. The removal of excess water, fats and salts through urine helps lose weight, which also reduces the effects of rheumatic conditions.

Antispasmodic: The relaxing and stimulating effect of this oil reduces spasms in the respiratory, muscular, digestive and nervous systems, while providing relief from congestion in the chest, breathing trouble, asthma, spasmodic coughs, muscular cramps, digestive disorders, spasmodic diarrhea, convulsions and various nervous afflictions.
Antiseptic: The high degree of toxicity of this oil can make it fatal to human beings, but that means that it is fatal to bacteria and other microbes such a virus, fungi and protozoa as well. This quality is utilized to fight infection that causes sepsis. It also kills the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus and cures sepsis. However, care should be taken to avoid direct contact with blood and it should never be applied to open wounds. Neither should it be taken orally to fight sepsis in the internal organs. Just applying this oil on the skin will be enough, as it will easily penetrate the skin, be absorbed by the tissues and will then be absorbed in the blood stream, thus spreading into the internal organs as well.
Aromatic: Although it has a pungent aroma, it is not unpleasant.  In certain cases, it can be used to overcome or mask foul smells, but this oil is not for regular application, as it is quite powerful.
Astringent: Astringents like the essential oil of wintergreen has a lot to offer. It induces contractions in muscle tissue, skin, blood vessels and hair roots. This results in the contraction of muscles and skin which adds firmness to the muscles and lift to the skin, making you feel better and look younger. When it comes to blood vessels, this contraction helps to curb hemorrhaging from wounded or impacted vessels. The hair roots are also contracted and strengthened by this astringent effect. I have deliberately not mentioned its effects on the gums since it should never be taken orally, under any circumstances.
Carminative: You may want to enjoy its carminative effects, but never take this oil orally, even in very light dilutions. Instead, once it is diluted in water, it can be rubbed on the belly which will eventually expel the gases.

Bergamot Is Not Just An Ingredient In Earl Grey Tea!

The health benefits of Bergamot Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties as a deodorant, vulnerary, vermifuge, antibiotic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, sedative, analgesic, antidepressant, disinfectant, febrifuge, cicatrisant, and digestive substance.
Bergamot is a citrus fruit whose rind is used for extracting the Bergamot Essential Oil. The scientific name of bergamot is Citrus Aurantium var. or Citrus Bergamia. It is a tropical plant, but thrives in Europe as well. Its powerful aroma makes it a popular component in msany perfumes, and it is often used as the all-important “top note”. It is derived through cold compression, opposed to the steam distillation of many other essential oils. One of the most common applications that you may not be aware of is its use in black tea. The inclusion of bergamot essential oil in regular black tea is then given a different name – Earl Grey!
The chemical composition of Bergamot Oil includes Alpha Pinene, Alpha Bergaptnen, Alpha Terpineol, Limonene, Linalool, Linalyl Acetate, Nerol, Neryl Acetate, Beta Bisabolene, Geraniol, Geraniol Acetate and Myrcene.
Bergamot Oil has a very sweet smell and a number of medicinal and industrial uses due to its properties, many of which are listed below.
Antidepressant & Stimulant: The components of Bergamot Oil, like Alpha Pinene and Limonene, are antidepressant and stimulating in nature. They create a feeling of freshness, joy and energy in cases of sadness and depression by improving the circulation of the blood. They also stimulate hormonal secretions, thereby helping to maintain proper metabolic rates. This stimulating effect also increases the secretion of digestive juices, bile and insulin, thereby aiding digestion, proper absorption of nutrients, assimilation and decomposition of sugar and the resultant lowering of blood sugar. The hormonal impact of bergamot essential oil is part of the reason that it is so powerful on these neurological and mental conditions.
Antibiotic & Disinfectant: Certain components of the essential oil of Bergamot are antibiotic and disinfectantin nature. They inhibit the growth of germs, virus and fungi. They also effectively prohibit infections, including those of the skin. If regularly used with bathing water or in soaps (it is already used extensively in skin care soaps), the skin and hair remains protected from infections and become shiny. It also cures infections of the colon, intestines, urinary tract and kidneys.
Analgesic: Bergamot essential oil reduces the feeling of pain in the body. Actually, it stimulates secretion of certain hormones which lessen sensitivity of nerves to pain. Therefore, it is very helpful in case of headaches, sprains, muscle aches or any other symptoms or ailments which require a heavy dosage of analgesic pills. This means that you can avoid the dangerous side effects of many over the counter pain medicines, which often have adverse side effects and can do damage to your liver and kidneys when relied on heavily, as well as thinning your blood, or causing you to lose sleep.

Reducing Stress May Lead To Clearer Skin

Anyone who’s had a pimple form right before an important event may wonder if stress caused the break out. While commonly linked anecdotally, proving the relationship between stress and inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne, psoriasis and rosacea, is another matter. An expert discusses the latest research on the impact stress has on inflammatory skin conditions and his thoughts on how this research could change treatment options.

"Nearly everyone has some form of stress in their life, so it's difficult to determine whether stress can actually make the skin's appearance worse," said board-certified dermatologist Richard D. Granstein, MD, FAAD, the George W. Hambrick Jr., professor and chairman of the department of dermatology, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York. "However, it's been known for a long time that the nervous system, which processes our stress, has an impact on conditions such as psoriasis."
Dr. Granstein discusses the latest research on the impact stress has on inflammatory skin conditions and his thoughts on how this research could change treatment options.
How does stress play a role in inflammatory skin conditions? Dr. Granstein said research linking the nervous system and the skin has long been understood. "If you interrupt the nerves' path to an area of a patient's skin affected by psoriasis, the psoriasis improves," said Dr. Granstein. "In addition, the condition improves if you inject local anesthetic into psoriasis patches. This information strongly suggests that nerves play a role in how psoriasis operates."

Dr. Granstein notes that animal studies have demonstrated that stress can make inflammatory skin conditions worse. In a Japanese study , mice genetically prone to develop a rash similar to the inflammatory skin condition atopic dermatitis did so when stressed, while mice that were not exposed to stress did not develop the rash.
Dr. Granstein said experimental data support the idea that the nervous system and stress affect inflammatory skin conditions in humans. Many types of cells in the skin, including immune cells and endothelial cells (cells that line blood vessels), can be regulated by neuropeptides and neurotransmitters, which are chemicals released by the skin's nerve endings. Stress can result in the skin's nerve endings releasing an increased level of these chemicals. When this occurs, it can affect how and at what level our body responds to many important functions, such as sensation and control of blood flow, and can contribute to the symptoms of stress that we feel. In addition, the release of these chemicals can lead to inflammation of the skin.
"If we could block specific steps in certain pathways between the nervous system and the skin -- without impacting the whole body -- we would likely have new ways to prevent or treat some skin disorders," said Dr. Granstein. "We're gaining a greater understanding of the mechanisms underlying many skin conditions, which will help us develop new therapies."
